FOUR SEASONS. PLENTY OF REASONS TO CAST.

When’s your island fishing season?

Marco Island offers fishing opportunities year-round. Each season brings a different rhythm—use this guide to start planning, then match your rental gear to your location, target species and the day’s conditions.

Winter fishingDecember–February

Cooler days. A different bite.

Cooler water changes where fish gather. Sheltered backwaters and coastal structure can be worth exploring, with sheepshead and pompano among the cooler-season possibilities. Let wind, tides and local access shape your plan.

Species to explore
  • Sheepshead
  • Black drum
  • Pompano
  • Redfish
  • Seatrout

Plan your day: After a cold front, ask the team about conditions and a suitable setup before heading out.

Spring fishingMarch–May

Warming water. Fresh possibilities.

Spring brings a shift toward warmer-water fishing. Snook and redfish are species to learn about, while tarpon become a seasonal highlight in the region. A moving tide and the right location matter more than a date on the calendar.

Species to explore
  • Snook
  • Redfish
  • Tarpon

Plan your day: Tarpon call for specialized tackle and handling; confirm equipment suitability rather than assuming a light rental rod fits.

Summer fishingJune–August

Start early. Follow the weather.

Warm water offers opportunities around beaches, passes and mangrove edges. Snook, tarpon and mangrove snapper are regional highlights. Early starts can help you plan around the heat; watch for thunderstorms and stop fishing when lightning threatens.

Species to explore
  • Tarpon
  • Snook
  • Permit
  • Mangrove snapper
  • Other snapper
  • Grouper

Plan your day: Permit and larger snapper or grouper opportunities can require different access and tackle, including nearshore or offshore trips.

Fall fishingSeptember–November

Changing seasons. Keep exploring.

As conditions shift, redfish, snook and seatrout remain part of the inshore picture, with flounder another species to learn about. Water temperature, fronts and storms can change the day quickly—stay flexible about when and where you cast.

Species to explore
  • Redfish
  • Snook
  • Seatrout
  • Flounder
  • Grouper

Plan your day: Grouper generally need a different fishing plan and suitable tackle; seasonal highlights do not mean every species is accessible from shore.

The best time also depends on the day.

Tides, weather, habitat and equipment all matter. These are regional species highlights, not guaranteed catches or open harvest seasons. Check current FWC rules before targeting or keeping fish, especially snook. Ask FAR whether the available rental setup suits your plans.

A LITTLE PREPARATION GOES A LONG WAY

Ready to cast?
Check these first.

Bring drinking water, sun protection, closed-toe footwear where appropriate, a way to collect your line and litter, and a weather-aware plan.

Keep hooks and casts away from people and wildlife. Never feed dolphins or birds, leave nesting areas undisturbed, and dispose of line responsibly.

Check current FWC species rules ↗

Your license

Visitors age 16+ generally need a Florida saltwater license, including for catch-and-release, unless an exemption applies. Children under 16 are exempt. Florida residents have different exemptions and shoreline options.

Get your Florida fishing license ↗

Your location

Marco Island permits beach fishing, but access rights, signs, protected areas and local restrictions still apply. Avoid swimmers and do not cross private property without permission.

Your species

Seasons, size limits, bag limits and additional permits vary. For example, snook has Southwest-region rules. Check the current FWC guidance before targeting or keeping fish.
